OHS ready to graduate 48 students on Sunday

Adorned in red gowns and black stoles, the Onaway High School Class of 2007 will receive their diplomas in commencement ceremonies Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at OHS.

The high school band, under the direction of retiring band director Larry Shaffer, will usher in the seniors with the traditional playing of ?Pomp and Circumstance.?

Superintendent/secondary principal Bob Szymoniak will offer opening remarks and present the class for graduation.

Special speeches will be given by valedictorian Bridget Bednark, daughter of Chris and Pat Bednark; salutatorian Greg Ellenberger, son of Bob and Norma Ellenberger; and honor student Christy Kowalski, daughter of Lorrie Kowalski and Rick Kowalski.

That will be followed by the graduating seniors joining the band for the playing of the ?Battle Hymn of the Republic,? and two other selections.

As of Thursday morning, 48 seniors were on the list of recommended students for graduation, although that number could change before Sunday. The first mandatory commencement practice was Thursday afternoon.

The new incoming senior class president will read the names of the graduates, while members of the board of education pass out the diplomas.

There will be a slide show and the turning of the tassels. Class officers are: Logan Hyde, president; Tyler Chapman, vice-president; and Mallory Pardee, secretary/treasurer. Teacher Penny James was class sponsor.
