by Richard Lamb– Advance Editor

Rogers City and Posen will get another look at each other before district play begins May 29 at the Steven Schalk Field in Rogers City. The Hurons and Vikings square off today at 4 p.m. in what could be a preview of the district championship. The tournament draw has the Vikings on the top of the bracket playing Johannesburg-Lewiston May 29 at 2 p.m. with the Hurons taking on Atlanta the same day in the 4 p.m. contest. Hillman plays the winner of the Posen/Joburg game Saturday, June 2 at 10 a.m. Onaway plays the winner of the RC/Atlanta game in the noon game June 2. The district finals are set for 2 p.m. June 2. All games will be played in Rogers City.

BEFORE THAT, coach Howard Madsen and his squad have some kinks to work out of the system. Rogers City has been up and down lately, showing great prowess in one game and fumbling the next. That came to pass Monday in a doubleheader split with Cheboygan, winning the first game 15-0 and losing game two 9-5 with a rash of errors.

?We need to do a lot of work on our defense. That is what happens with an inexperienced team, but this is not an inexperienced team,? Madsen said. ?We need to work on coming together because we are not together. We need to work on some more game situations.? In the first game with Cheboygan, the Hurons racked up 14 hits, led by Scott Kowalewsky with three hits and three runs. Jordan Zempel, called up from the junior varsity to play shortstop, hit a leadoff homer in the first inning.

IN THE second game, a three-run rally in the top of the fifth inning cut the Chiefs? lead to 6-5, before Cheboygan

rallied for three in the bottom of the frame for a 9-5 win. Cheboygan?s number nine hitter blasted two homers and drove in five runs in the win. Nick Kowalski went six innings, allowed 11 hits and a walk. Evan Vogelheim blasted a solo homer in the fourth inning for one of his team?s six hits.

The Hurons took runner-up honors in the Ogemaw Heights tournament Saturday. Rogers City defeated Marine City 17-1 in the first game, behind the five-hit pitching of Joe Finch. He struck out three and walked two in four innings. Rogers City scored eight in the first, seven in the third and two more in the fourth inning.

JOHN RHODE HAD three hits and scored two runs. Isaac Freel, Tyler Schuiteman, Zempel and Kowalski each had two hits in the game. Bay City All Saints snatched a 10-6 win over the Hurons in the championship game. Rogers City led 6-2 before BCAS scored five in the fourth inning and three in the fifth. Saturday the Hurons travel to Glen Lake for a tournament, Monday they host Newberry and Tuesday they host Alpena in the last scheduled games before district tournament action. It was not certain if the games rained out in Onaway last week would be rescheduled.
