Cedarville memorial to recognize 42nd anniversary

On May 7, 1965 the S.S. Cedarville was struck by the Norwegian vessel, the Topdalsfjord, about two miles east of the Mackinac Bridge. The collision of the two massive ships caused the Cedarville to sink quickly, taking ten of its crew with her. In order to commemorate the Cedarville and her crew, the Great Lakes Lore and Maritime Museum will host a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 5. The names of each crewman who died in the accident will be read, along with those survivors who have since passed away. Museum director and surviving Cedarville crewmember Dave Erickson will also give a brief history of the Cedarville. A bell will toll for each crewmember lost. The event is free of charge, and the public is encouraged to attend, and will also be able to visit other areas of the museum after the memorial program is complete. The Memorial Hall room contains artifacts and memorabilia from the Cedarville, as well as the S.S. Carl D. Bradley, the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald, and the S.S. Daniel J. Morrell. The museum is still in need of bell ringers for the ceremony. Anyone who is interested, including the general public and/or Great Lakes sailors, please contact Erickson at 734-0706.
