Girls compete at wrestling national meet

This past weekend Rogers City Youth Wrestling?s two girls wrestlers traveled to Livonia for the Girls Nationals. There were more than 700 young ladies from all over the USA at Nationals. In the Elementary Division Kayli Witulski wrestled in the 68 pound weight class. She wrestled in a six-man round robin which gave Kayli five matches, which she wrestled over two days. Kayli went 2-3 and earned a fourth place. Kayli wrestled very well over the two days. Kayli wrestled girls from Ohio, Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan.

Leilani Kortman was the other young lady that wrestled for Rogers City at Nationals. She wrestled in the Middle School Division at 104.5 pounds. The middle school girls is a 16-man bracket, where if you lose two, you are out. Leilani had a bye in the first round and won her next match beating a young lady from Ohio to move into the semi finals on Sunday. On Sunday she lost her first match to a girl from Nebraska, who ended up winning the Nationals at 104.5 pounds. Leilani dropped down in the losers bracket and wrestled back to end up third, beating a girl from California and a girl from Missouri.

Kortman was third last year at Nationals at the same weight. There was a lot of good wrestling over the two days. Both girls look forward to next year. Kayli will be in fifth grade next year and Leilani is looking forward to starting her high school wrestling career next year.
