Area baseball and softball teams ready for action

With the festive events surrounding Opening Day in the City of Detroit, spring, and yes, the spring high school baseball and softball seasons, are drawing closer. It?s anybody?s guess when spring will officially arrive, but softball and baseball games are scheduled within the next week. Viking coaches Glenn Budnick and Pat Kowalski take their charges into Cheboygan County for what should be competitive games Tuesday against Inland Lakes. Traditionally, the Bulldogs have fielded solid baseball and softball teams. The ball teams hit the diamond for the season opener at 4:30 p.m. That?s the good news. The bad news is the weather.

The preliminary forecast on the AccuWeather website for Tuesday calls for cloudy and cold conditions. The high is expected to be 38 degrees. The Vikes are at home April 16 against St. Ignace. The Huron baseball and softball teams begin their seasons April 16 at Alcona and will not see regular season action on Gilpin Field until Friday, April 20 when Hillman comes to town. The preseason rankings have Howard Madsen?s Huron baseball team ranked 6th.

While the Posen and Hillman softball teams are honorable mentions in the Michigan Softball Coaches Association poll, Rogers City softball, which had received pre-season rankings several years in a row, was left off the list. The district tournaments for baseball and softball will be in Rogers City.
