Coach Lamb said balanced attack is needed to win SAC and 21st straight district

Tournament time arrives quickly during the winter sports season for high school wrestlers. For Rogers City, it starts with the Straits Area Conference Saturday at Newberry and then spring boards into the beginning of the Michigan High School Athletic Association post-season tournament. Parents? Night is tonight on the home mats against Whittemore-Prescott as the Hurons lone opponent. Gaylord had entered the meet but has since backed out. The action gets underway at 6 p.m.

The Hurons will look to extend their team district winning streak to 21 when they travel Wednesday to Onaway. The conference-winning streak stands at two. During both years that Rogers City has won the conference title, it has set the tone for the playoffs, as the last two trips down the tournament trail have ended in trips to Battle Creek. While the Hurons? have been 7-0 against conference competition, coach Pat Lamb believes there is a lot of parody in the league. ?Sault Ste. Marie has been coming on late,? said Lamb. ?They have a strong tournament team. I am looking for a run from them.?

ST. IGNACE has a strong tournament team, and with four outstanding seniors, Onaway should rack up some solid points. Cheboygan has been riddled with injuries. Lamb said the key will be a balanced attack and to have his wrestlers place fourth or higher. The Hurons have four returning conference champs, which include senior Brent Freel, as well as juniors Jerome Gapczynski, Chase McLennan, and Tharin Wilk. ?We certainly do not want t

o lay an egg when we get up there,? said Lamb. ?We are traveling up there on Friday night to make sure the young men do not have to get up so early. Hopefully, we?ll be primed and ready to go.?

At Sault Ste. Marie last week, Rogers City led the entire way against the Blue Devils and picked up their 21st win of the season, 42-30. The Hurons are 21-2. Lamb had anticipated some good competition from Gladstone, but they had weather related problems and were a ?no show.? Winners at the Soo included Jake Vogler, Michael Vogler, Tharin Wilk, Brent Freel, Zak McLennan, Tyler Schuiteman, Chase McLennan, and T.J. Sobeck.

The team district tournament Wednesday includes host Onaway, Mancelona, and Boyne City.
