Posen starts the year 3-0 on hardcourt

Notice has been served that the Posen Vikings are going to be in the running for a North Star league title in 2007. The Vikings have started off hot in ?07 with impressive wins against Gaylord St. Mary, Hale, and Atlanta. The Viking?s eyebrow raising, 73-52, domination of Hale last Friday propelled Posen from middleweight status to heavyweight. They are 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the league, heading into a contest against winless Arenac Eastern Friday at home. The Vikes sprinted to a 10-0 run to open the contest, but slipped up toward the end of the first quarter. Hale cut the lead to five heading into the second, when Posen went to work on defense. They got their hands on the ball when Hale players tried to move in close to the basket, resulting in numerous turnovers. The Eagles also missed several shots.

PAUL KROLL and Brandon Hentkowski had five points each in the quarter, as the home squad opened the lead to 18 by halftime. Jordan Hincka also had four of his game-high 19 points in the scoring spurt. Nick LaTulip did most of his damage in the second half. The guards were feeding him the ball in the post and he was money. He ended up with 14. Kroll added 10. Every player made the scoring book but one. The Posen lead was as many as 24 midway through the fourth quarter. It left several fans wondering how Hale defeated Fairview earlier this season. The Vikings will get their next shot at Fairview, February 9.

POSEN IMPROVED their conference record with a blow out road win Tuesday at Atlanta, 60-29. The bench came through with some quality minutes, according to head coach Steve Hentkowski. For example, Jason McLeod and Nathan Strzelecki both had six rebounds each. After a tight first quarter, Posen surged ahead in the second and third quarters. The lead was 50-23 heading into the fourth. ?Nick LaTulip gave us a bit of scare in the second period as he took a bad spill,? said Hentkowski. He would get back in the game. Leading the scoring parade were Hincka with 17, LaTulip with 13, while ?Uncle Sam? Matt Styma poured in 11 points and cleaned the glass with s

even boards. Brandon Hentkowski dished out seven assists.

To kick off the New Year, the Vikings clobbered St. Mary, 65-43. Hincka had a season-best 24. He had five three pointers in the game. LaTulip ended with 19. THE VIKING JV was 1-2 over the last week. The Vikings ended a mini-losing slide with a doubleovertime win against Atlanta, 73-65. Scott Couture hit a fade away jumper with about 17 seconds left to tie the game. Posen got a steal and got a final shot off, but could not win the game in regulation. It would take additional time to get the job done, but Posen improved to 3-4 overall and 3-2 in the league.

Justin LaPointe had 27 points and nine steals. Jake Delekta had nine. The boys lost by 11 to St. Mary and 29 to Hale. Couture had 16 against Gaylord, while Delekta had 13. Luke Bruski added 12 points against the Snowbirds.
