Hurons finish strong in win at Inland Lakes

Proving that it?s not important how you start, it is more important how you finish, the Hurons took a 69-40 win at Inland Lakes Tuesday. Huron coach Karl Grambau hopes the team has turned the corner with St. Ignace coming in on Friday. The Hurons are back on the winning track, following losses to Sault Ste. Marie and Alcona. ?It is a key game for us and we are hoping a big home crowd will get behind us,? Grambau said. The Saints, many of who were in attendance at Indian River Tuesday, come into the game 7-1 and tied for the Straits Area Conference lead. Grambau expects a battle Friday with the scrappy, but undersized Saints. ?I think we match up really well, but the Saints? coach probably thinks they match up well with us. It should be a good battle,? Grambau said.

TUESDAY?S GAME brought out the best and worst in the Hurons. A horrible first quarter began with a Scott Kowalewsky basket one minute into the quarter for the first basket of the game, but ended with the Bulldogs leading 10-6. Six Huron turnovers afforded the home team the chance to hold the Hurons scoreless until the final moments of the first quarter. That all changed in the second eight minutes as the Bulldogs fell silent for more than five minutes while the Hurons roared out to a lead. Kowalewsky followed a missed shot by tipping in the rebound, then senior point guard Andy Tulgestke went end-to-end for a lay-up to tie the score at 10-all. Bret Karsten?s triple from the left corner and Scott Grulke?s three moments later from the same spot on the floor gave the Hurons a 16-12 lead. From there the Hurons were off to the races. The Hurons ran out to a 27-12 lead with 1:33 left in the quarter after Karsten hit a shor

t banker. The next Bulldog basket came with 1:01 left in the quarter?their first basket in nearly five and one-half minutes of play. Kowalewsky?s eight points in the quarter, all after offensive rebounds, keyed the team?s turnaround to a 34-14 halftime lead. The Hurons led 57-21 at the end of the third quarter, after baskets by Trent Holmes and Andy Grambau in the closing seconds. It would be the largest lead of the game for the Orange and Black. Karsten led the team in scoring with 18 points and five assists. Kowalewsky had 14 points and 14 rebounds while Tulgestke added 14 points, four steals and four assists.

LAST FRIDAY, the Hurons dropped a 58-36 game in Alcona. The Tigers led all the way, 14-12 at the end of the first quarter and 26-19 at halftime. Karsten?s 15 points led the team in scoring. The JV Hurons won its fourth consecutive game at Inland Lakes, notching a solid 66-34 victory. A 19-3 first quarter set the tone for the game as the Hurons led 33-11 at halftime and were never challenged. Justin Idalski scored 13 while Jordan Zempel had 10. Devon Ferris and Trent Hayhoe each scored eight. The Hurons managed just 6-of-22 from the free throw line, a point certain to get attention from coaches Karl Momrik and Mike Grulke. The JV defeated Alcona 53-39 last week, despite connecting on just 5-of-18 from the line. Rogers City led 12-11 after one quarter but turned it on in the second period, taking a 29-19 lead at the half. Idalski had 15 of his team-high 17 points in the first half while Ferris added 12 points.
