Huron bowlers land a leading roll in St. Ignace

The Rogers City Huron bowling teams traveled to St. Ignace for the Northern Michigan Bowling Conference on Saturday, with the boys? team earning a first place finish over the Gaylord Gold team, 17-13. THE HURONS started off solid with a 202 win in the first baker game, earning the team four points over Gaylord Gold. The second baker game did not go down as smoothly, and Rogers City handed it over to the opposing team, 147-166. This baker loss did not sit well with coach Brian Bannasch.

?The 202 baker game was a good start, and then we bowled more than 50 pins less in the second baker,? said Bannasch. ?There is just no excuse for that much of a drop.? The Rogers City team rolled on, winning the first regular game, 978-823. Individual winners included Lucas Bellmore (193), Devon Ferris (177), Henry Dietlin (214), and Ryan Darga (190). Although he rolled over 200, Alec Gajewski lost his individual by a narrow margin.

The Hurons followed up game one with a loss in game two, 813-864. This time out, only Darga would win his individual with a 197 game. Tyler Greenway rolled 147, Tim Gray rolled 119, Gajewski scored 170, and Dietlin followed with 180. The two-game total was enough to edge the Hurons into a win, although coach Bannasch believed his team could have performed much better.

?It was nice to start off the season with a victory,? said Bannasch, ?but we have to work on bowling more consistently in the future.?

THE LADY Hurons did not fair as well in St. Ignace, losing against Cheboygan, 3-27. Coach Bannasch said his girls? team was ?overmatched? by the talented Cheboygan bowlers. ?Although we did win three individual points, the team was never in the match,? said Bannasch. ?Cheboygan did not have an individual game under 140, and they bowled two good baker games.? Cheboygan started off by snagging both baker games from

Rogers City, 170-138 and 177-138. In the first regular game, Cheboygan again came out on top, 801-759. Danielle Darga earned her team one point for her close win against Cheboygan?s Michelle Wright, 150-149.

Paula Vogelheim also earned her team an individual win with her game of 198. Kaelie Florip rolled 107, Tayler Bannasch rolled 142, and Heather Kowalski finished with 162. In game two, the Hurons lost again, 650-748. Florip won her individual, 163-145, earning the only team point in the second regular game. Ashley Bellmore rolled 118, Darga rolled 100, Bannasch had a 137 game, and Heather Vogelheim rolled 132.

?The one good thing to come out of this match for the girls was that everyone got an opportunity to bowl,? said coach Bannasch. Next up for the RC rollers is a match at the Gaylord Bowling Center on Saturday at 10 a.m.
