County precinct to be recounted today

The four member county board of canvassers will be conducting Presque Isle County?s first recount of an election in about a decade-and-a-half, Friday at 10 a.m.

A petition was filed by Jessie Palmer November 16, who served on the Onaway City Commission, before losing her seat to Jerry Robinson by four votes.

She had to file a petition after the board of canvassers certified the November 7 election. Palmer also had to ask why she wanted the precinct recounted and deposit $10.

According to county clerk Sue Rhode, the board of canvassers certified the election November 15. The period for requesting a recount was six days after the votes were certified.

?AFTER THE request for a recount has been filed, objections can be filed up to 4 p.m. on the seventh calendar day after the submission of the original petition,? said Rhode. ?Notice must be given to candidates by my off

ice within 24 hours of the filing of the petition. Those were hand delivered by the Presque Isle County Sheriff?s Department.?

City clerk Kelli Stockwell has to bring all election-related materials to the courthouse for the recount.

Longtime incumbent, and former mayor, Bernie Schmeltzer, easily won re-election with 213 votes. Robinson followed with 162. Palmer received 158 votes. Robinson already has served during two regular city commission meetings.

The county board of canvassers includes Democrats Bonnie Farmer and Patricia Gabrysiak and Republicans Janet Lamb and Marilyn Sinclair.

Rhode has been in office for nearly 10 years and this is her first recount as county clerk. She believes the last recount occurred during the early 1990s.
