Cheboygan takes win over Hurons

A hot-shooting, slick-passing Cheboygan team took care of business in a 73-39 win over the Hurons (1-9) Tuesday in girls? basketball action. Rogers City hung with the 10-1 Chiefs for a while, but an 8-0 run in the last 25 seconds of the first quarter gave the Chiefs a 24-8 lead, and momentum the rest of the way. ?We kind of lost our concentration for a little while at the end of the first quarter. Every once in a while we seem to take a little break out there,? said Huron coach Paul Stempky.

AFTER THE CHIEFS scored the game?s first eight points, the Hurons had a mini-rally of their own. Tiffiny Krueger and Chelsie Brege each hit jumpers from virtually the same spot inside the key, and Kaitlin Klingshirn scraped for a pair of rebound put-backs, before the late first quarter run by Cheboygan. A 6-0 Huron run, highlighted by some great passing, cut the lead to 12 at 30-18 with 1:57 left in the second quarter. Dana Fairbanks took a feed from Jenny Fleming, and then Brege fed Fleming, before going end-to-end for a bucket in the run. Cheboygan led 38-24 at the half. The Chiefs? game centers on quick passes and gaining good position inside. They used those skills to run off the first 11 points of the second half and build a 49-24 lead after the first two minutes of the third quarter.

A paid of triples from Brege, and a banker from Fleming cut the lead to 53-32, before a 6-2 run at the end of the quarter made it 59-34. Stemp

ky said he has seen signs of improvement in the play of his team. ?The girls are starting to come around a little bit. They are working hard in practice. We have set some goals for the rest of the season that we think we can accomplish,? Stempky said. Fleming scored 12 points and Brege added 11 to pace the Hurons.

LAST THURSDAY in Onaway, the Cards stayed hot, defeating the Hurons 39-25. A 12-5 Onaway swing in the second quarter gave the Cardinals a 20-9 lead at halftime. Brege had 10 points while Fairbanks added seven in the contest. Onaway freshman point guard Allie Nave paced the Cardinals with 12 points.

THE JV Hurons (2-8) lost a pair of games this week. Tuesday at Cheboygan, the Chiefs used a 17-2 margin in the first quarter to propel them to a 58-19 win. The Chiefs led 31-6 at halftime and 46-14 after three quarters. Katie Tulgestke scored six points and Greta Grambau added four. Onaway notched a 44-17 win over the JV Hurons, after leading 22-9 at halftime. Anna Wickersham scored five points to pace the Hurons. Rogers City hosts hosts St. Ignace Tuesday.
