Basketball team splits with UP opponents

Two trips across the Mackinaw Bridge yielded one win for the Huron basketball team this week. A 47-38 win in Newberry Thursday was followed by a 56-41 loss in St. Ignace Tuesday setting up a game with Onaway. Coach Paul Stempky has the task of preparing for an improved Onaway squad, which came en mass to watch the Hurons play Inland Lakes last week. ?I know they are quick and they love to press,? Stempky said. ?We will be ready for Onaway and work on our press break.?

TUESDAY IN St. Ignace, the Hurons showed strength early, then fell victim to the Saints pressure and up-tempo play. Rogers City led 10-4 after Chelsea Brege connected on two free throws with 4:14 left in the quarter. The Hurons lost the lead briefly but regained the edge when Kaitlin Klingshirn set up Tiffiny Krueger for one of Krueger?s eight first quarter points as the Hurons ended the quarter with a 15-14 lead. The teams played nearly dead even in the second quarter, as the Hurons were tied with the Saints at 19-19, 21-21, and 23-23 to end the first half. Jenny Fleming?s inside jumper tied the score for the final time with 41 seconds left in the half. Cold shooting, coupled with tough defense by the Saints gave St. Ignace the edge in the third quarter and in the game. St. Ignace outscored Rogers City 11-2 over the first four minutes, interrupted only by Brege?s driving shot at the 5:48 mark. The Saints stretched the lead to 12 at 39-27 before Fleming hit a rebound shot, and followed that moments later with a bucket off a pass by Heather Kowalski to trim the margin to eight. The quarter ended with the Saints up 45-34.

A FREE throw by Kowalski and a bucket for Fleming cut the lead to 10 in the first minute of the fourth quarter, but that would be as close as the Hurons would come the rest of the way. Krueger scored 12 points, Fleming had 11 and Brege added 10 in the contest. St. Ignace shot 15-of-35 from the free throw line while the Hurons hit on 10

-of-23.

IN NEWBERRY last Thursday, the Hurons (1-3) played a well-balanced game in giving Coach Stempky his first varsity win as Huron head coach. ?In Newberry we executed, moved the ball, and hit the open person. It was a team effort that night,? he said. Trailing 24-22 at halftime, the Hurons came out on fire in the third quarter, posting 16 points to the Indians? four. Brege scored all 10 of her team-high total in the quarter. Fleming had nine, with seven of those coming in the fourth quarter. Krueger added eight. The Hurons hit on 11-of-18 from the free throw line while Newberry connected on 3-of-10.

THE JV SQUAD suffered a pair of losses. Newberry doubled up on the junior Hurons in a 56-28 loss. Rogers City trailed 14-8 at the end of the first quarter and 26-15 at halftime. Logan Schuiteman and Sara Carpenter each had six points for the Hurons. Tuesday in St. Ignace, the Saints ran out to an 18-0 lead after one quarter of play in a 54-19 win over the Hurons. The Hurons trailed 35-9 at halftime and 41-17 after three quarters of play. Katie Tulgestke scored 12 for the Hurons (1-3).
