Millersburg Homecoming Saturday & Sunday

As the season turns toward fall, the Village of Millersburg is prepared to host its annual Homecoming Celebration sponsored by the Millersburg-Ocqueoc Business Association (MOBA). Two fun-filled days of activity are planned, starting on Saturday and running through Sunday afternoon.

THE 5K run/walk will kick the celebration off Saturday morning. Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. at the Depot in Millersburg. Race organizer Wendy Robins said the event is open to anyone who would like to participate.

?This race is meant to give people a taste of what fun it can be,? said Robins. ?After they give it a try, they may want to continue running or walking.?

It is the sixth year for the race, which includes a 5K run and a one-mile fun run or walk. Robins said there are many age categories, and she encourages parents to bring children. ?Bring your kids ? bring your dogs,? said Robins. ?We even allow kids to ride their bikes alongside mom or dad.?

Registration price for the fun run is $12, while the 5K is $17. T-shirts will be available for all participants. Medals will be awarded for first through third place in all age groups. Trophies will be awarded to the overall top male and female athletes. Both races begin at 8:30 a.m.

The skeet shoot will begin at 10 a.m. at the Millersburg Fairgrounds. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Bob Pochmara has organized this all-age event for three years.

THE GRAND Parade will begin at noon on Saturday. Line-up is at 11 a.m. at Freel Highway. The theme this year is ?Mardi Gras,? and is sure to attract some colorful, festive floats.

?The theme of Mardi Gras was chosen to commemorate New Orleans,? said MOBA treasurer Amy Whitsitt. ?It is the one-year anniversary (of Hurricane Katrina), and we wanted to remember that in some way.?

Whitsitt said Sharon Winfield organizes the parade, and it attracts a good crowd. ?We usually have a good turnout for the parade,? said Whitsitt. ?There are about 20 to 30 floats, and it?s a lot of fun.?

Immediately following the parade, the Kid Games will be held behind the Millersburg Elementary School. The games are for kids of all ages!

?This is a family event organized by Renee Brenner and Janet Pochmara,? said Whitsitt. ?Children and adults can take part in eating contests, sack races, the egg toss, and much more.? The Historical Display and Bake Sale will be conducted all day Saturday at the Depot, and is sponsored by the Millersburg Historical Society.

The Ocqueoc Baptist 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will begin at 2 p.m. at the Ocqueoc Baptist Church. There is no cost to participate. There will be two different age groups, and the contest will highlight a three-point shootout. Participants are asked to arrive before 2 p.m. to register.

THE KIDS? River Raft Parade will wow the crowds at 5:30 p.m. All children are encouraged to bring a decorated raft. The parade will begin at the Brooks residence, and continue down the river to Russell Memorial Park.

?The kids decorate their rafts and float down river,? said Whitsitt. ?It is an event to kick-off the duck race, and it is a lot of fun. The kids are always pretty proud of their rafts, and hopefully they all make it down the river.?

Following the kids? parade, the Duck Race will be conducted at Russell Memorial Park. Ducks can be purchased at Mini Mart for $1 each. Half of the proceeds go back to the Mini Mart. ?The duck race is always fun and it gathers a crowd to see who will come in first,? said Whitsitt. ?We usually sell quite a few ducks.?

The culminating event on Saturday is the Sportsman?s Dinner at the Ocqueoc Baptist Church starting at 6

:30 p.m., where wild game will be the main course. There will be a hunting presentation, and there is no cost to participate.

ON SUNDAY, the Bump and Run will attract the crowds back to the Millersburg Fairgrounds, starting at 1:30 p.m. Registration for the event is from 9 a.m. to noon. The Millersburg Fire Department sponsors this popular event.

?This is a big family event,? said Whitsitt. ?We had a wonderful crowd last year, and every year it seems to get bigger.? This year at the Bump and Run, there will be handicap-accessible viewing sites to ensure that all people can partake in the event.

The Fire Association Truck Raffle will be held during the Bump and Run intermission. Tickets can be purchased from local businesses and the fire department members.
