Little League playoffs begin today at Indian River and Cheboygan

Little League?s second season begins today with double elimination playoff games being played today at different locations. The Major Boys team (11 & 12 year olds), managed by Eric Brege, will begin a district title bid today at Indian River. The boys will take on Petoskey in a 4:30 p.m. contest. Win or lose, the Little Leaguers, which consist of players from Rogers City and Posen, will play Saturday. There are approximately nine teams participating in the tournament. Rogers City lost a couple of close games to Petoskey in 2005. The state tournament is at Petoskey.

The assistant coaches are Dave Ciarkowski and Rich Lenard. The Major Girls (11 & 12) tournament, meanwhile, will take on host Cheboygan. The game tonight is at 7 p.m. The winner will play Friday at 5 p.m. against either Onaway or North Emmett. Also in action today are Harbor Springs and Tri-Rivers. The winner advances to play Petoskey tomorrow, who has a bye. The finals for the Major Girls are scheduled July 11 and 12. Both games are at 5:30 p.m. The state finals are in Jackson. Managing the local team is Richard Lamb. He is being assisted by Jim Connell.

Minor Girls (9 & 10) competition gets underway Saturday with two games scheduled at Onaway. Rogers City and Tri-Rivers (Indian River) play at 2 p.m.; and Cheboygan and Onaway are in action at 4 p.m. The Rogers City-Tri-Rivers winner advances to play North Emmett Sunday at 2 p.m. The finals are scheduled for July 13 and 14. The state tournament is at Mattawan. Donna Couture

The tournament for the Junior Boys (13 & 14) gets underway Saturday at Harbor Springs. Rogers City received a bye and awaits the winner of the Cheboygan-North Emmett contest to be played Friday. Rogers City?s game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. The squad consists of 10 players. Junior Girls (13 & 14) will be at Pellston and play against North Emmett July 12. The game is scheduled to be played at 6:30 p.m. There are only four teams in the tournament. The team consists of 11 players. The state tournament is at Eastwood.

The Minor Boys (9 & 10) will be the last all-star squad to start action July 15 at 11:30 a.m. They will take on the winner of the Cheboygan-Harbor Springs contest. The tournament will be played at Onaway.
