Soo takes pair from softball Hurons

Rogers City will look to get back in the win column after a pair of losses in Sault Ste. Marie Monday. Marquette comes to town for a pair of games today (Thursday) at Gilpin Field. Tuesday?s games with Inland Lakes were cancelled, leaving the Hurons with only two games for the week. In the Soo Monday, junior all-state second baseman Laura Konieczny led off the game with a homerun, but the Hurons managed only three other hits in losing 4-3. Elly Plath, who worked both games of the doubleheader, allowed just one earned run, while recording six strikeouts, and two walks. Blue Devil hitters managed five hits off the sophomore lefty, but scratched for two unearned runs in the first, and one unearned run in the second. Rogers City scored two in the top of the sixth, but couldn?t tie up the game. Moni Cercone, Chelsie Brege, and Hannah Bellmore had a hit each in the game.

WITH THE score tied 2-2 in the second game, the Soo scored three in the fourth, one in the fifth and four in the top of the sixth to earn a 10-3 win over Rogers City. Plath went six innings, striking out three and walking four, while giving up 12 hits.

rl Grambau?s squad notched 17-1 and 13-1 wins over the visitors. The Hurons scored five runs in the first inning to set the tone for the day. Cercone led off with a triple and scored on senior right fielder Liesa Kelley?s single. After Konieczny flew out, Bellmore drew a walk. Tiffiny Krueger?s fielder?s choice scored Kelley. Courtney Ciarkowski then drove in two more with a double. Rogers City scored four in the second, four in the third and four more in the fourth to get the mercy rule. Plath got the win, striking out eight and hitting a batter. Ciarkowski drove in six runs while Krueger scored four times.

SAINT PITCHERS walked 14 Huron batters in the second game, also shortened by the mercy-rule. Krueger pitched all five innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and four walks. She struck out 10 in the game. Junior catcher Dana Fairbanks drove in three runs while Konieczny had two hits and scored three times. The Hurons play in a tournament in Alpena Saturday, then play in Cheboygan Monday, in Alpena Tuesday, and host Posen Wednesday.
