Posen on a seven-game winning streak

The Posen baseball team has a modest seven-game winning streak heading into their last regular season tune-ups against Atlanta and Johannesburg-Lewiston. Following Saturday?s home tournament win, the Vikings swept a pair of games at Arenac Eastern, 20-5 and 3-0. Pitchers Dave Karschnick and Brandon Hentkowski are both 7-4 on the season, while Derek King has had a pair of three hit games during the winning streak. The Vikings have not lost since the opening game of the Mackinaw City Tournament May 13. They finish up the league portion of their schedule with a pair of home games today at Atlanta, and then Friday hosting Johannesburg-Lewiston. The Michigan High School Athletic Association Division IV baseball tournament gets underway at Hillman with a pre-district contest against Atlanta Tuesday at 4 p.m. A win would put them in the district semifinal against Rogers City June 3 at 10 a.m.

HENTKOWSKI PICKED up his seventh win of the season with a two hitter against the Eagles Monday, striking out seven and allowing no walks. The game lasted only four inni

ngs because of the mercy rule. King was three-for-five with six RBI, while Dave Karschnick was two-for-four with five RBI. Nick Idalski had a pair of doubles and Aaron Romel was two-for-three with a double and two RBI. Karschnick (6 IN, 3 H, 4 W, 9 K) was getting all three of his pitches over for strikes in a shutout victory in the nightcap. The Vikings had only two hits from Hentkowski and Idalski. Head coach Pat Kowalski is pleased with the marked improvement in the defense, saying his boys have been executing the fundamentals of the game. Posen was 14-8 overall and 8-4 in the league heading into today?s action.

AT THE HOME tournament Saturday, the Vikings won 7-2 over Superior Central and St. Ignace 10-5. Hentkowski got his sixth win of the season (6 IN, 5 H, 2 R, 6 W, 10K) against Superior Central. King was three-for-three with three RBI, while Romel was two-for-four. Idalski had a two RBI double. Getting his first varsity hit was Brandon Beach, who went one-for-three. Karschnick went to the mound in game two and picked up his sixth win (4 IN, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 W, 3 K). Nick Delekta, Dillon Wirgau, and Idalski had two hits apiece and combined for four RBI.
