RCHS honor students named; Kreft, Smith, and Hempel head class of ?06

RCHS honor students named; Kreft, Smith, and Hempel head class of ?06 Honor graduates for the Rogers City High School Class of 2006 have been announced by principal Deb Jones. The 18 honor students head a class of 53 candidates for graduation. Commencement will be conducted Sunday, June 4. Valedictorian, with a 3.99 grade point average, is Lacey Kreft, daughter of Karen and Randy Kreft. Sharing the honor of salutatorian are Jennifer Smith, daughter of John and Deb Smith, and Jessica Hempel, daughter of Chris and Krista Hempel. They each compiled grade point averages of 3.98.

Lacey Kreft has participated in cross country and track. She also is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, and junior prom committee. Her interests include nature and animals, drawing, reading, biking, swimming, and running. Kreft will be attending Central Michigan University in the fall where she plans to study to become a physical therapist while major in athletic training, before entering the graduate program.

Jennifer Smith served as student council class president, class president, yearbook editor, National Honor Society secretary, and in Key Club. She also participated in basketball and volleyball. Smith plans on attending the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor this fall to study in the pharmacy program. She hopes to someday work for a major drug company in pharmaceutical research.

Jessica Hempel was the captain of the Huron volleyball team during the 2005-06 seas

on and co-captain of the track team, as well as a member of the cross-country squad. She traveled to Europe with an international exchange band and was a member of the jazz and concert bands. Hempel was second runner-up in the Nautical Queen?s pageant, and a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, and Natural Helpers. She is involved at Joy Community Church on the praise team. Her interests include playing flute, swimming, and reading. Hempel plans on attending the University of Michigan, and upon graduation, plans on working in the Peace Corps in South America and later working in Asian foreign relations.
