Baseball hosts tournament this weekend

Two wins over Petoskey have the Huron baseball (6-3) team on a roll. Winners of three straight games, the Hurons were set to host Alcona Wednesday (after press time) and host a home tournament Saturday. In Petoskey Monday, the Hurons took a 7-1 win in game one, behind the pitching of Cody Wenzel. The senior righthander pitched six innings, striking out seven and walking one while allowing three hits. The Hurons scored two in the third inning and four in the fourth. Austin Fairbanks, Justin Wilbert, Wenzel, and Jake Bellmore each had two hits.

IN THE SECOND game, Chris Santini worked all six innings, as he picked up the win in the 5-2 game. Santini allowed six hits, three walks, and struck out two. Coach Howard Madsen?s squad banged out nine hits with Wilbert and Wenzel each getting a single and a double.

ON MONDAY, the Hurons split a doubleheader with Rudyard, losing a heartbreaker in the opening game and coming back in the nightcap. Leading by five runs with three outs to get, the Hurons let the game get away as Rudyard scored eight runs in the inning to steal an 11-10 win in game one. Rudyard coach Jim Myers, a RCHS graduate, saw his team take advantage of walks and timely hitting in the win. Fairbanks started and worked the first five and one-third, coming out in the midst of the Bulldog rally. He walked eight, struck out three and allowed four hits. Wenzel came on for the final two-thirds of an inning, allowing five hits and five runs in taking the loss. Wenzel had a single and a double while Bellmore had three RBIs with his single and double. The Hurons took out their frustrations in a 7-2 darkness-shortened nightcap. Rogers City scored six runs in the fourth inning as Isaac Freel earned the win. The junior lefty went five innings, walking two and striking out eight. Both runs were earned. Rogers City had seven hits with Wenzel and Tyler Schuiteman collecting two each.

LAST FRIDAY IN Hillman, the Hurons and Tigers each won a game. Rogers City

won the first game 10-5, behind the pitching of Wenzel. He went all six innings, walking two and allowing seven hits while striking out two. Rogers City scored two in the first, one in the second, and four more in the third to go up 7-1. Fairbanks had three hits and scored three runs in the game. Santini, Wenzel, and Freel each had two hits. Santini pitched well enough to win in the second game, but the Hurons couldn?t manage to score a run in a 3-0 loss. Santini went all six innings, striking out two and walking two while allowing seven hits and two earned runs. The Hurons managed just four hits in the game.

ROGERS CITY will host a four-team tournament Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. The Hurons host Cheboygan Tuesday and St. Ignace next Thursday.
