Onway High School inducts 17 new students into NHS

Seventeen new students from Onaway High School were inducted into the National Honor Society (NHS) Wednesday evening. Welcoming them were the 18 current members; advisor, Penny James; Pastor Peter Bartlett; guest speaker and entertainer, Donna Klein; and many proud parents and family.

The Onaway chapter of NHS started 54 years ago and has celebrated more than 600 members being inducted. The students of the NHS are involved in many community activities, such as tutoring, blood drives, peer mentorship, and after school programs. They also host the annual Father/Daughter and Mother/Son Dances.

In order to be inducted into the NHS, students must earn a grade point

average of 3.0 or higher. They must submit essays and artifacts to show their leadership and citizenship, among other qualities. After this process, they are either recommended or declined.

The seventeen member inducted this year include the following sophomores: Danielle Chapman, Levi Dennis, Christopher Ellenberger, Nicole Jabro, Grant Malone, Megan Murphy, Trevor O?Meara, Neil Osantowski, Christine Pomranke, Emiley Schlaufman, Paige Tibbits, Ashton Veihl, and Teresa Wilson. The juniors inducted included Addie Brasseur and Krista Peterman. The seniors inducted were Morgan McDowell and Amanda Stiles.

After the induction program, singer and songwriter, Donna Klein, entertained attendees. She also spoke to the inductees and stressed that the students need to stay active in their community and in their decision-making. She discussed the six pillars that form the NHS and welcomed the new students into ?the ranks of the National Honor Society.?
