One More Sturgeon Allowed on Black Lake

The nine-day sturgeon season on Black Lake may come to a close early if the last available fish is speared before Sunday. A third and fourth sturgeon were harvested Tuesday and Wednesday.

The third sturgeon was 60.5 inches long, weighed 48 pounds, and was speared by Bob Hope of Indian River. He also took a sturgeon in the 2001 season.

Louis McKay of Gaylord took the fourth sturgeon, which was a 65-inch, 64-pound female with no tag.

The sturgeon season on Black Lake opened last Saturday and runs through Sunday. Of the 695 applicants who wanted a chance at a sturgeon, 225 were chosen from a lottery.

There are 25 anglers allowed to fish each day until the season is over or the fifth sturgeon is caught. For more information, go to www.michigan.gov/dnr.
