North Allis Township home receives extensive damage in Saturday fire

The Onaway Fire Department responded to a one-story structure fire last Saturday at 2:59 p.m. at the Stan and Jenny Chaskey residence on Hutchinson Highway in North Allis Township.

Presque Isle County Central Dispatch received a call from a neighbor, who saw flames coming from the building.

According to fire chief Eric Rose the fire had not been burning long, but the damage left the couple with the prospect of major repairs to their home. They also lost a pair of beloved dogs named ?Sarge? and ?Treasure.?

Rose believes the fire started in a chimney pipe connected between an airtight wood stove and the house. The heating system was located in an eight-foot square building. The concrete building, which was located eight feet away, had a wooden roof.

THE CHIMNEY pipe may have become plugged, Rose said, which in turn got the fire going. Preliminary investigation indic

ates the chimney as a possible point of origin.

The flames started the roof of the adjacent building on fire, and a slight breeze blew the flames over to the Chaskey?s house where the fire got up into the eaves.

More than 2,000 gallons of water was poured on the building.. The OFD was assisted at the scene by crews from the Forest Waverly and Case Township Fire Departments. A total of 20 fire fighters responded, 12 from Onaway, Rose said.

The southeast section of the house was gutted, while the rest of the building received extensive heat and smoke damage. The couple did have insurance.

None of fire fighters was injured battling the fire. They were clear of the scene at 4:49 p.m. The fire remains under investigation.
