Semi jack-knifes at courthouse curve

The Onaway Police Department investigated an accident involving a semi that jack-knifed at the State Street/Washington Avenue curve.

The accident occurred last Thursday at 11:17 a.m. Robert Moore, 54, of Onsted was traveling westbound on State Street at about 20 to 25 m.p.h.

A report from chief Jim Gibson states that Moore attempted to raise an axle as he was going into the curve near Maple Street. The axle would not raise, causing the truck to jack-knife on the traffic island in front of the Onaway Courthouse.

The load shifted, causing minor damage to the trailer. The jack-knifed trailer also caused some damage to the sleeper cab of the tractor. In addition, a Michigan Department of Transportation sign was knocked over.
