Rogers City woman takes third at Eagle River race

Rogers City?s Tina Derry found success on the snowmobile track last weekend in Eagle River, Wisconsin. Derry drove a 1973 Sno Jet 295 to a third place finish in the 340 women?s single fan cooled modified division on the half-mile track. She took first place in her first race ever on Friday, winning her heat over six other racers in the five-lap race. The race was run under the lights on the high-banked oval track. The top five from each race would qualify for the finals on Sunday. She watched the second race on Saturday and got ready for Sunday?s finals.

The racers all started from a dead stop at the start line, making it important to get a jump on the competitors heading into the first corner. Derry started from the third position on the inside, holding that spot into the corner and until the end of the race. The finals were cut to three laps, due to deteriorating track conditions.

?I?m happy. I walked out of there with a trophy,? she said, stating that she plans to return to race again, if asked. She rode a sled owned by Mark and Marsha Williams of Gulliver. The Williams sponsored three racers, each of whom won a trophy on the weekend. More than 300 racers participated in the weekend vintage races.

Derry and her husband, Dan, are organizers of the Rogers City Antique and Vintage Snowmobile Show, set for March 10-11. A great turnout is expected for the second year of this event, as the first one was well attended.
