Posen volleyball takes Atlanta

After suffering a tough loss in Hillman last Thursday, the Posen Varsity Volleyball team welcomed its first North Star League conference win. The Vikings beat the visiting Atlanta Huskies in three out of four games, 25-15, 17-25, 25-18 and 25-18. Posen started off strong in the first game of the match, taking advantage of a frenzied Atlanta team who had a hard time pulling their defense together. Viking coach, John Dietlin, threw a tough punch when lining up the two strong serves of senior Sara Patterson and junior Megan Pieczynski. Back-to-back, the two starters racked up 10 ace serves and 13 points to lead the red and white to a 1-0 lead for the match. However, the high energy coming off of game one would not be enough to carry the Posen team through to a second game victory. The Vikings quickly lost momentum and communication at the halfway marker. It would be serving errors and lack of communication that would bring the two teams even at one game a piece heading into the third. Posen came back strong with smart plays at the net and quickly regained their lead.

It would be the fourth and deciding game that would give the Vikings an opportunity to show off their strengths. Although the Huskies took off with a fast lead in score, they were no match for the hustle of junior Jenny Ciarkowski and the intelligent play of senior Amanda Pieczynski. Posen took the lead, the game and the match through a combination of back row attacks, ace serves and intense net play. Coach Dietlin was pleased with the performance of his team. ?The girls really came together as a team tonight and played well,? Dietlin said. ?It feels good to take a win on our home court.? Now that the Vikings have a conference win under their belts, coach Dietlin feels it is time to really step up the level of performance. ?We are working on improving certain aspects of play, such as keeping communication and our intensity up,? Dietlin said. ?We can learn something from every game.? Leading Posen in aces was Patterson with 10.

Megan Pieczynski had 7 aces and 16 assists. Senior Beth Julian racked up 5 digs and 4 kills, while Ciarkowski added on 4 kills of her own. The Junior Varsity team pulled off another win, beating the Huskies in a tight three game match. The Vikings lost their first game 18-25 and came back strong and determined to nab the next two, 25-23 and 25-22.

Sophomore Kori Latz led the Vikings with 2 aces, 3 kills and 2 assists. Sophomore Ashley Sobek had 2 aces, 1 kill and 1 assist, while freshman Nicole Purol added on 2 kills and 1 ace. The Lady Vikings go on the road Thursday to battle Au Gres.
