Library TAALES Program Receives Grant for Fourth Season with Support from Local Sponsors

The Presque Isle District Library is pleased to announce that TAALES, The Author, Artist, Lecture and Education Series received a grant from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs and the Cheboygan Area Arts Council for the fourth consecutive season. This year, the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan awarded full grant funding for TAALES. The program series focuses on Michigan?s exceptional talent in all areas of the arts, and is now enabled to expand its programs reaching more audiences by providing additional venues throughout Presque Isle County.

This includes area community schools offering students the opportunity to participate in artistic and cultural enrichment programs; the Onaway Historical Courthouse; the Presque Isle Association Clubhouse; the Rogers City Theatre for musical performances, and author/artist evening presentations at the Presque Isle District Library in Rogers City. Recognizing the importance of life-enrichment programs for all ages, local sponsors including J&L Camera & Electronics, and Moran Ironworks, and the library Friends Groups, are also helping to fund TAALES to outreach into the community with quality programming.

The series kicks off in February and will run through May 2006. TAALES premieres the new season celebrating music! On Thursday, February 23, the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra will perform an interactive program for all area students at the Rogers City Theatre at 2:00pm with an evening concert at 7:30pm for the general public. The orchestra is comprised of professional musicians from northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula; many have performed with professional orchestras throughout the United States and have brought their talents home to northern Michigan.

A Celtic music celebration performed by the ?Ourselves Celtic Band? is sure to get your heart pumping and your feet tapping as they perform traditional and original Irish, Great Lakes, and Appalachian mountain music at area schools in Onaway, Posen and Rogers City and present the evening concert at 7:30pm at the Rogers City Theatre on Thursday, March 9. Combining the talents of photography and writing, the team of Kathy-Jo and Ed Wargin known for their Legend Series will share these talents with the audience on Thursday, April 13. Kathy-Jo is best known for her nationally acclaimed, award-winning children?s classics, ?The Legend of Sleeping Bear?, ?The Legend of the Loon?, and many others. Ed Wargin has recently published ?Legends of the Light? which explores the legendary lighthouses of the Great Lakes; along with other published works, ?The Great Lakes Cottage Book?; and ?Michigan, The Spirit of the Land?.

They will combine their talents, enthusiasm, knowledge, professional imagery and storytelling to captivate audiences of all ages. In addition, the Wargins will present at the local area schools, along with a noon presentation at the Onaway Historical Courthouse. The evening program will be held at the Presque Isle District Library in Rogers City with an author/artist reception and book signing to follow the program. The final program in the TAALES series is on Thursday, May 11. Susan Robishaw is a published Michigan Author in various genres.

Robishaw will present and discuss her books, ?Tips from a Northern Gardener? and ?Homesteading Adventures, A Guide for Doers and Dreamers? at the Onaway Historical Courthouse, 2nd floor; the Presque Isle Association Clubhouse; and the Rogers City branch of the Presque Isle District Library. Middle school students from the area schools will have an opportunity to read ?Rosita and Sian Search for a Great Work of Art? and share in a one-on-one book discussion and book signing with the author as well.

The TAALES program continues to focus on presenting exceptional Michigan artists and authors, ideally from northern Michigan whose fields range in the area of art, culture, history, dance, music, literature, and storytelling.
