Key filing date for May 2 election is a week from Tuesday

It will be a busy election year in Presque Isle County. The first of several key dates for candidates running for public office is fast approaching. The filing deadline for school board candidates is February 7, while deadlines for judicial positions and county board of commissioner seats will follow in the coming months. A candidate who wishes to seek a position on the board of education in Onaway, Posen, and Rogers City must file a nominating petition and an affidavit of identity with the Presque Isle County clerk no later than 4 p.m. February 7. According to county clerk Sue Rhode, Onaway school board member Sharon Lyon was the only school board candidate to file a petition form as of Monday. She is filling the remaining term of a school board member who stepped down shortly after last May?s election. Erik Schultz is also fulfilling the last six months of his term in Onaway.

ONE POSITION in Rogers City and Posen will be filled. Jo Bush Glenn is finishing a four-year term in Rogers City, while Dennis Budnick is completing his 24th year in Posen. The positions are regular four-year terms, and will expire June 30, 2010. Petition forms may be picked up at the superintendent?s office in Posen and Onaway. Petition forms in Rogers City are available only at the county courthouse.

The number of signatures required is a minimum of six and a maximum of 20. A $100 non-refundable fee may be filed in lieu of a petition. The regular school election will be May 2. The last day to register to register in the May 2 election is April 3. The May 2 election date, which is one of four election dates established by the Michigan legislature, is also the final day for candidates seeking judicial positions to file. The term of probate judge Ken Radzibon expires this year. The new term will be for six years. The deadline for candidates to file is 4 p.m. on May 2.

The next key filing date is May 16, when partisan and nonpartisan candidates need to have their forms to the clerk?s office by 4 p.m. The primary election is August 8.
