Hurons dual record improves to 8-1; Coach Lamb pleased with 2005 performance

The Rogers City Huron wrestling team traveled to Mio last Thursday to take on the host Thunderbolts along with visiting Kalkaska. The Hurons defeated both schools and improved their record to 8-1 in duals. Rogers City defeated Kalkaska 51-24 and Mio 59-15. ?We wrestled a little bit flat coming out against Kalkaska, and in talking to the guys at practice on Monday, I figured out that they had some voids, and I think our guys looked at that and saw that we were going to win the match regardless,? said head coach Pat Lamb. ?Maybe we wrestled a little tentative, a little bit flat in that match. ?Against Mio, we beat them pretty soundly. It was a pretty good match to end the year.?

Overall, Lamb is pleased with his team?s performance in 2005. ?I?M VERY pleased with our team. Practice has been a pleasure,? said Lamb. ?They work hard, they get along well, and they have fun. What more can you ask for? Winning is fun, but having that family-type atmosphere at practice and everywhere we go, sure makes me feel good as a coach.? Their record could have been even better, but a quad meet at Oscoda was cancelled, and has yet to be rescheduled. The only loss was to a very good Petoskey team on the home mats. Double winners at Mio were T.J. Sobeck (103 pounds), Michael Vogler (112), Tharin Wilk (125), Dylan Centala (130/135), Cody Wenzel (145), Tyler Schuiteman (152), Jerome Gapczynski (160), and Mark Grulke (189). Single winners were Brian Krueger (119), Chase McLennan (171), Derek Schleben (215), and James Bruning (275).

CENTALA REMAINS undefeated at 17-0 and leads the team with 106 points. He pinned both of his opponents at Mio in 3:03 and 54 seconds. Wilk earned pins in both of his matches in 3:51 and 58 seconds. Sobeck won both of his bouts by decision (9-2 and 9-1). Wenzel’s first match didn?t make it through the first period as he recorded a pin in 1:50. He defeated Mike Kososky of Mio 15-4 in the second match, with most of the points coming in the final period. Gapczynski pinned Cody Rossen of Mio in 52 seconds and got his other win from a void.

Schuiteman pinned Frank Mousseau of Kalkaska in 54 seconds and received a void win in his second match. Both Grulke and Vogler both received two wins each from voids. The Orange and Black will return to the mat on January 5 at home against St. Ignace and Rudyard.
