Safety concerns cited as reason to close parking lot for a portion of the school day

The newly-appointed supervisor of buildings, grounds, and transportation Pat Lamb believes the Rogers City Area Schools ?have dodged the bullet long enough? in regard to the parking lot between the high school and elementary. Because of safety concerns, Lamb decided that something needed to be done to address the problems the school has been dealing with in the parking lot.

Lamb said there were students running between vehicles and that either someone was going to be struck by a vehicle or there was bound to be a bus-vehicle accident. Starting Tuesday, the parking lot between the schools was closed to all traffic except for staff and busses between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. ?We need to keep the safety of our students as our primary focus and this is why this action is being taken,? Lamb stated in a letter dated October 24 that was sent out to parents and guardians.

Elementary students can be dropped off in front of the elementary school, while junior high and middle school students will need to be dropped off on the Erie Street or Huron Avenue side of the high school. Students being dropped off in the back parking lot of the high school will need to walk alongside the high school to get to the middle school entrance. They also can be dropped off at the sidewalk off Huron Avenue or in front of the high school. The first day went ?really well,? Lamb said Tuesday afternoon.

?People who drive in this area will be given a warning,? Lamb stated. ?Any further infraction of this rule will be handled by the Rogers City Police Department.?
