Russ Hayner selected as deer story contest winner

Russ Hayner first went on a deer hunt when he was 20 years old in 1933 and has seen all but two seasons since then.

His camp is located off M-33 on an 80 acre parcel that is surrounded on three sides by a large wetland, which is why it is called Kinney Island. Kinney was the name of the fellow who had the land before him.

His home is situated at the end of South Lynn Street in Onaway on a piece of land that includes a number of houses with children and grandchildren residing in the same vicinity.

The flooring is unique. Many years ago the old Onaway high school gymnasium roof sprung a series of leaks and the entire floor buckled and had to be removed. Hayner arranged to acquire the wood and hauled it away. He installed the short maple boards throughout the house and gave them a fresh coat of varnish. Hayner?s story is called ?A Little Bit of Buck Fever? and contains a series of vignettes of different episodes at deer camp over the years. Excerpts from Hayner?s story will be printed in next week?s paper.
