Posen wins its ninth straight and sixth overall with Hillman on tap

The Posen girls basketball team won its sixth straight game and ninth consecutive conference contest heading into tonight?s North Star League showdown with Hillman. Posen (13-4, 11-1) has its sights set on an out right league title, which would be the program?s first NSL championship since 1980. They?ll have to defeat Hillman for the second straight time to reach that goal. Hillman, which is Posen?s biggest rival in girls athletics, will be looking to get one back from the Vikings after the Red and White ended the Tigers undefeated season September 29. Coach Tom Schellie said his girls played one of their best games of the season the night they cut down the Tigers. That was then, this is now. Posen might be playing better now than it did in September.

SCHELLIE HAS been impressed with the way the girls have played in their last four games, calling the victories the best of the season. ?We may be peaking at the right time,? Schellie said. There are two league games left against Hillman and an Arenac Eastern team that the Vikes easily handled, so an outright NSL title comes down to tonight?s game against the Tigers. On Tuesday, Posen earned the season sweep over Atlanta, 68-35, as juniors Mary Calhoun and Roxann Hincka combined for 43 points. Calhoun led the way with 22, while Hincka had 21 points and 15 rebounds. The girls got off to a hot start and never looked back outscoring the Huskies 23-4 in the first quarter. ?The girls played real well defensively,? said Schellie. ?We got the fast break going and we were beating Atlanta down the floor.? The score at the break was 40-15. The teams played even through the third quarter, but Posen put the exclamation point on the night with a lights out 14-6 fourth quarter.

ES to shoot well from the free throw line. Last Thursday against Au Gres, the Vikings made 27-of-36 shots from the charity stripe in a 68-53 win at home on Parent?s Night. Three players scored in double digits. Calhoun led the way with 16, while Hincka had a double double with a dozen points and 18 boards. Senior Jill Krajniak netted 13 in the game. Junior Jenny Ciarkowski and senior Amanda Pieczynski both added nine each. The Vikings last lost against Alcona nearly a month ago. The last regular season loss was almost two months ago when the Vikes lost to Mio on the home floor. The girls avenged that loss October 6.

After tonight?s game against Hillman, the Vikings travel to Alcona Tuesday, and then are back home next Thursday for the last home game of the season against Arenac Eastern. The district tournament begins November 14 in Hillman. Posen plays Hillman November 16 at 7 p.m. The Posen JV is 11-6 overall and 8-4 in the NSL after a 76-19 win against Atlanta Tuesday and a 42-22 victory against Au Gres last Thursday. They?ll start tonight?s doubleheader at 6 p.m.
