Onaway Chamber sponsors Halloween contests and a poker tournament

Scarecrows are invading Onaway. The town has been decorated with scarecrows with garden shears, corncob pipes, and even goatees.

That?s right, there?s a scarecrow in front of the Chagnon Funeral Home with a pumpkin head that has a painted-on goatee, sunglasses, and it is sitting under an inflatable palm tree.

The scarecrow will be one of more than a dozen-and-a-half that have been entered in a contest sponsored by the Onaway Area Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber treasurer Candy Faith said 16 had been registered by Wednesday afternoon, and other last minute entries were expected.

AREA BUSINESSES were invited to participate in the fall decorating contest for a chance to win a prize basket from local merchants. Judging will be Saturday at 10 a.m. ?It?s free to get into the contest,? said Faith. ?It?s actually going quite well.?

Faith received a call from one business registering a scarecrow and the person had praise for the contest, ? ?I just wanted to tell you the town looks very nice.? ? To register a scarecrow to be in the running for the prize basket call 733-2874.

It?s one of many activities the chamber has organized for the next couple of weeks.

LOCAL CHILDREN are being encouraged to enter a pumpkin-carving contest. Pumpkins can be picked up at the Onaway Area Community Schools building Thursday, October 27 or Friday, October 28 from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. or at Painter Petroleum on the same days from noon to 6 p.m.

The children need to carve their pumpkins and b

ring them back to Chandler Park Saturday, October 29 between 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. for judging and treats.

All participants bringing a carved pumpkin to the park will get a bag of candy. Prior to a costume parade at 6 p.m., the pumpkins will be lit. There will be prizes for the best-carved pumpkin and for the best costume.

In addition, there will be hot dogs, cider, and spooky music, Faith said.

Another activity planned for Saturday is the first annual Texas Hold-Em poker tournament at Stoney Links. There is a $1,000 cash prize available along with a trip to Las Vegas as a door prize.

The first cards will be dealt shortly after 3 p.m. Proceeds will be used to fund ongoing projects, including the fireworks show for next year?s July 4 festival.
