Heather Pines hired as Drama Club coach; hopes to have first production by Christmas

A new drama coach was hired at the Rogers City Area Schools Board of Education meeting. Six applications were received for the position with three individuals, all from Rogers City, being interviewed. Heather Pines was offered the job and officially hired by the board Monday. She has a masters degree in English language and literature from Central Michigan University and a bachelor of science degree in theatre and English from Northern Michigan University. Pines is currently employed by Alpena Community College as an adjunct English teacher, however, it is not expected to interfere with the drama advisor position she has accepted with Rogers City Schools. She has directed, acted, choreographed, helped with costumes, done make-up and built sets for the Rogers City Drama Club and around the area. Pines is a 1999 graduate of RCHS.

?HEATHER HAS a love for theatre that will benefit our students and the entire community and is excited about the job and is ready to take the (Drama) Club to New York City,? stated interim superintendent Paul Mancine in his report to the board. ?In my opinion this is really great news for the drama department.? K-12 principal Deb Jones said ?her love of theatre will benefit our students and the entire community.?

Pines attended the meeting and commended her predecessor Bryan Mills. “Bryan has done a fantastic job with the program,? Pines said. ?I look forward to working with the students and the community to continue putting on great shows.”

IN OTHER matters to come before the board: ? A letter of resignation dated September 28 from Bryan Mills was accepted. The motion expressed the board?s sincere appreciation for Mills? past dedication and service to the district and the community. The board also wishes him well with his professional and personal endeavors.

? Student Morgan Suszek appeared before the board to ask if they would consider changing the tardy policy or

if the students could have more time to travel in the hallways between classes. Suszek believes five minutes is not enough time and had a petition with 104 signatures from fellow students who had the same position. ?There?s not enough time between classes and the punishment is too harsh,? said Suszek. He said it has become increasingly difficult to travel from one wing to the next without being able to pass through the middle school hallway. Since Suszek had not brought the issue before the principal Mancine said Suszek needed to follow the schools command-of-chain and to bring the matter before Mrs. Jones first.
