Congressman Stupak tells of Iraq, hurricanes, and gas prices at town hall meeting

Congressman Bart Stupak made Rogers City one of six stops on his town hall meeting swing of his district. Covering an area from the Upper Peninsula to just north of Bay City, Stupak?s area covers nearly half of the state of Michigan Stupak?s main talking points at the town meeting were the war in Iraq, hurricane Katrina, and gas prices. On Iraq, Stupak said there seemed to be no end in sight to the United States? involvement in Iraq. ?We don?t seem to be getting much closer to a resolution,? he said. He regrets that ?nearly 2,000 Americans? have died in the conflict since the U.S. invaded Iraq.

?There is no way we are going to win militarily. We have to do it politically,? he said. The idea of democracy takes some time to develop, he said, while suggesting that President Bush ?swallow his pride and go to NATO or the ESC? and tell them to take charge of Iraq. Part of the problem, he said, is that the United States is viewed now as an occupying force. On the hurricane, Stupak said there is enough blame to go around. As a member of the oversight committee, he has had a chance to ask questions in hearings on the governments? response to the disaster.

He is asking questions like ?who is in charge and what is your plan to rebuild,? he said. ?We need someone in charge, someone calling the shots.? Stupak said he is leading the way to prevent price gouging in regards to gas prices. He said part of the problem is that there are 177 refineries mothballed nationwide, including two in Michigan; one in West Branch and the other in Alma.
