Alcona runs to 33-24 win over Hurons

A bruised Huron team suffered a bitter 33-24 loss to Alcona Friday at Gilpin Field in Rogers City. The Hurons led 24-14 with 8:55 to go in the third quarter after Chase McLennan hit Cody Wenzel with a 19-yard TD pass.

Then disaster struck as Alcona came up with19 unanswered points to steal a win in a hard-fought game. Alcona overcame more than 20 penalties called on them, but moved the ball consistently on the ground with a variety of runners.

The Hurons suited up just 14 players, then lost starting tailback and linebacker Dylan Centala to an injury late in the first quarter then lost running back Cody Wenzel, who was ejected midway through the fourth quarter. Several other Hurons nursed injuries throughout the game, but continued after brief rests.

Tyler Schuiteman scored two touchdowns, the first coming on a 45-yard interception in the first quarter to tie the score at 6-6 and the second coming on a 53-yard kickoff return.

Next week the Huron roster will have at least three additional players availabl. Each will return after serving three-game suspensions for athletic code violations. They will be needed since Centala’s status is unknown and Wenzel must sit out a game after his ejection.

Rogers City (2-1) hosts St. Ignace next Friday.
