Junior boys eliminated from tournament

Rogers City Little League?s Junior Boys team was eliminated from district tournament play July 20 when Petoskey took a 13-7 victory. Petoskey charged to a 5-0 lead in the first inning to force Rogers City to play catch-up ball. Rogers City scored two runs in the third inning, four in the fifth, and one in the sixth. Petoskey had five in the third inning, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. Petoskey?s Eric Berger struck out four while allowing 11 hits. Hitting doubles were Jordan Zempel, Justin LaPointe, Aaron Romel and Ben Tulgestke. Josh Curtis stroked two singles while Romel, LaPointe, Matt Mertz, Erik Meharg, and Scott Grulke all had base hits.

Combining duties on the mound for Rogers City were LaPointe, Grulke and Zempel. They struck out a total of six batters. Rogers City had opened tournament play July 15 with a 7-5 loss to Petoskey. The loss dropped them to the loser?s bracket, where they played each day for the next five days. The Rogers City-Posen players defeated North Emmet 19-1, Onaway 17-4, Tri-Rivers 19-11 and Cheboygan 12-4. Petoskey was the only team to go undefeated in the seven-team tournament. Managing the Rogers City all-stars was Adam Florip. Coaches were Kevin Klecha and Mark Kandow.

With the District 13 championship, Petoskey advanced to the state tournament which starts today in Midland.
