Fleming to play in basketball all-star game in Brighton

Rogers City super-athlete Ashley Fleming will make history on Saturday when she?ll become the first RCHS graduate to participate in a high school girls basketball all-star game. Fleming turned in a dominating performance during her four innings on the mound in the Division IV softball all-star game a couple of weeks ago in East Lansing and had to turn down an invitation to play in the volleyball all-star game. Karl Grambau, who coached Fleming in basketball and softball, went out on a limb to say that if the high school record books were checked, there wouldn?t be too many athletes in the state who have ever been invited to participate in all-star games in all three major girls high school sports.

?She is very, very deserving of the honor,? said Grambau, who will travel to Brighton High School for the 11 a.m. game. It will be the first time ever that Grambau will miss the Saturday of the Nautical Festival men?s softball tournament, which he organizes, so he can watch her in action.

Fleming will play for Ferris State University this winter and has been preparing now for what awaits her as a freshman playing college ball for the Bulldogs. Playing in the all-star g

ame with athletes from Class C and D schools will be a nice warm up for her, especially since one of the players at the all-star game will be one of her teammates at FSU. Teghan Thelen, a guard from Pewamo-Westphalia High School, was a candidate for Miss Basketball and is expected to be at the game. The athletes were to have one practice at 7 a.m. before hitting the hardwood.

Grambau said Fleming has been working with volunteer coach Mike Grulke in preparing for the game Saturday and for her playing days at Ferris. ?I?m looking forward to meeting new people and to having fun,? Fleming said of the upcoming game.

Ashley finished her basketball career as the all-time scoring leader in girls basketball. The 1,756 total points also tops the llist for boys basketball.
