School superintendent in Posen resigns to take job in Mesick

Dennis Stratton resigned Tuesday morning as superintendent of Posen Consolidated Schools after serving three and a half years in the job. He is going to become the superintendent of the Mesick Consolidated Schools in Wexford County. The first thing on everyone?s mind seemed to be how the school district would manage the situation with classes set to begin in a month and no suitable candidate on the immediate horizon. Asked what prompted his decision to resign, Stratton said, ?I hadn?t given it a whole lot of thought until the opportunity came open and I thought I would give it a shot and lo and behold, it opened up for me.?

Stratton worked as middle school principal in Cadillac for 12 years before coming to Posen as superintendent in January 2002. He succeeded John Raabin the post. ?My mother is retired in Interlochen and my two daughters also live in the area, so it gives me an opportunity to be closer to family members,? he said.

STRATTON EXPLAINED that he will live only 15 minutes away from his mother who is over 80 years old. ?It gives me the chance to help out with shopping and other chores,? he said. Asked what the next step is for Posen, Stratton said his recommendation to the board was to get an interim superintendent so they would have some

time to figure out which way they wanted to go.

He suggested that the option was open once again for Rogers City and Posen to explore ways to share a superintendent, as both communities will be looking for a new superintendent in the coming months. Stratton indicated that he would be leaving in two to three weeks, depending on contract negotiations and other logistics of moving. ?I?d like to make sure all the loose ends are taken care of as much as possible before I leave. I am hoping I will be able to attend the next (and my last) board meeting in August to coordinate on a number of topics,? Stratton explained.
