Jones is a candidate for assistant in superintendent in Hillman

A local school administrator is one of two candidates in the running for the assistant superintendent post in the Hillman Community Schools. Deborah Jones, who has been K-12 principal of the Rogers City Area Schools for the last 11 months, may find out Monday if she will be offered the job. A public interview was conducted May 19 in Hillman, followed by an onsite visit by Hillman school board members last Thursday in Rogers City. The committee was to have its onsite visit with the other candidate, Cadillac Middle School principal Jack Richards, today.

THE HILLMAN school board has a special meeting scheduled for Monday at 7 p.m. to make a decision on a finalist. Hillman has been looking for a superintendent since last fall. The board originally had started a superintendent search, but didn?t find the right candidate, so the position was reposted as a high school principal/assistant superintendent. It will be a superintendent-in-training job, said Hillman interim superintendent Tom Harmon, who has committed to another year, but ?the sooner the better. I have fish to catch.? There were three candidates, but the school board decided to conduct final interviews only with Jones and Richards.

JONES STARTED in Rogers City three years ago as Rogers City Elementary School principal and eventually accepted the job as K-12 principal in May 2004. She took over that new role July 1, 2004. ?I love Rogers City and my job here,? Jones said Tuesday, ?but I want to be a superintendent.?

On May 23, board members in Rogers City interviewed Jones for the interim superintendent position in Rogers City.

After interviewing Jones and Paul Mancine, former Alcona Community Schools superintendent, it was decided that the board should enter into negotiations with Mancine. In the meantime, the Rogers City school board continues to explore the possibility of sharing a superintendent with the Posen Consolidated Schools.
