Community of Hawks hosts Spring Fling

It?s Spring Fling time in Hawks. The annual pre-summer festival in downtown Hawks is full of good food, softball and a Sunday parade. The events begin Friday evening with Mexican Night food from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and music of ?Redline? of Oscoda from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Saturday the double elimination softball tournament gets underway at 8:30 a.m. Games will be played on the Hawks Field and in Rogers City at ?The Hole.? Faith Lutheran Church Youth Group will be conducting a bake sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There also will be a Taylor craft booth and doll raffle from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A PIG ROAST meal will be served starting at 10 a.m. and hot dogs will be sold at Hawks Field by the Hawks Community Improvement Association beginning at 10:30 a.m. Other foods to be found in the village throughout the afternoon include hamburgers, kielbasa, salad, and chicken barbecue. Faith Lutheran Church has a contemporary church service at 5 p.m. and invites everyone to ?come as they are.? ?Redline? again hits the stage at 9:30 p.m. for another evening of music.

The softball tournament will resume at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, with games played in Hawks only. The Memorial Holiday parade will be featured at 1 p.m. Sunday, with Jack and Alice Arlt leading the units as parade grand marshals. Parade entries start lining up for judging at the Bismarck Township Hall at 11:30 a.m.

> FOLLOWING THE parade will be the Memorial Day observance which will be handled this year Rev. Randal Waibel from Sunrise Assembly of God Church, along with the Honor Guard from VFW Post 607 of Rogers City. The HCIA hosts children?s carnival games at Centennial Park about noon. Also at noon is a Chinese raffle with the winners announced at 4 p.m. A double elimination horseshoe tournament begins after the memorial service.

At 2 p.m., members of the RCHS Choral Department, directed by Bryan Mills, will perform at Centennial Park, weather permitting. The softball tournament trophy presentation will be at 7 p.m.

The activities of the weekend will not overshadow the message of the weekend: ?We give thanks on this Memorial Day that we live in a free nation. We honor those who have served or are serving in the armed forces. All of you have given some, and some of you have given all. Thank you.? The HCIA
