Vikings drop two in season’s first doubleheader

The Posen baseball team started off the season Monday with a pair of hard-luck losses at Joburg. The Cardinals won game one 2-0, courtesy of a walk-off two-run homer off reliever Brandon Hentkowski, the only hit he allowed in relief of Jordan Purol. Purol started, throwing five innings of shut-out ball, while walking two and striking out five. “It was a very well played game on both sides,” said Viking coach Pat Kowalski.

The Vikes managed just one hit in the contest, a single in the first inning by Nick Goupell. Game two didn’t go any better for the Vikings. Joburg put up a run in the first, two in the second, and one in both the third and fourth innings in the 5-0 win. Hentkowski went the first four and one-third, surrendering only one earned run on four walks, and six strikeouts. Matt Szczerowski worked the final two-thirds of an inning, allowing two hits.

The Viking bats were silent and the team was hurt by poor defense. “Our defense really faltered in the second game,” Kowalski said, as his team allowed four unearned runs. A highlight came in the second inning as freshman Nathan Strzelecki notched his first varsity hit, a double. Goupell added a single for the Vikings’ other hit.
