Scholar-athletes to be honored by SAC

RCHS principal Deb Jones announced that nine scholar-athletes will be honored at the first Straits Area Conference Scholar Athlete Banquet Thursday at St. Ignace. Those students are Becky Bruning, Kristy Curtis, Carrie Haselhuhn, Desiree Farmer, Isaac Momrik, Chris Paschke, Jessica Konieczny, Kristyn Blackmer, and Diana Stempky. All are seniors at RCHS. “This is the first of what we hope will be an annual event,” Jones told the RC board of education Monday. Guest speaker at the dinner will be former RCHS all-state volleyball and basketball player Karla Fairbanks, who recently completed a stellar collegiate volleyball career at Ferris State University.

Fairbanks was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II All-America Second Team) at the end of her senior season at Ferris last fall.

Fairbanks helped guide the Bulldogs to a 25-7 overall record during the 2004 campaign, including a second place 14-4 GLIAC North Division mark. FSU, which won its first-ever GLIAC Tournament title this season, also advanced to the NCAA-II National Tournament for the 12th time in school history. Karla is the daughter of Dr. Russell and Mary Fairbanks of Rogers City. MHSAA director Jack Roberts will also speak at the banquet.
