Hurons go for state titles in wrestling, bowling; Vikings cap magical regular season at perfect 20-0

Four area sports teams ended February in grand fashion. Three RCHS teams, the boys and girl bowling squads and the Huron wrestlers, qualified for the state finals last week, while the Posen Viking basketball team capped off a wire-to-wire regular season run, the likes of which had never been seen before. The Huron bowlers brought home a pair of trophies from the regional tournament at the Gaylord Bowling Center to earn berths in the team state finals Saturday at Sunnybrook Lanes in Sterling Heights. The Rogers City boys took runner-up honors at last year’s state championships.

The individual finals are Friday, with three Huron students qualifying at regionals. For the girls, Heather Kowalski and Alicia Lamb earned spots, while Ben Basel qualified for the boys. The singles competition begins at 9 a.m. for both the boys and girls. Saturday, the boys begin finals competition at 8 a.m., while the girls get going at 10:45 a.m.

THE HURON WRESTLERS showed the folks in Munising what “L.P. Power” and “Huron Power” is all about, with a 57-12 win against Rudyard to advance to the regional finals. The much-anticipated dual match with Munising wasn’t meant to be as Gwinn knocked the Mustangs off, so that set up the final with Rogers City and Gwinn.

The Hurons (23-4) took it to the Model Towners 57-10 to earn Rogers City’s first trip to Cereal City since 2000 and the program’s sixth visit to the quarterfinals at Battle Creek. Wrestling coach Pat Lamb is hoping his boys will make some history by becoming the firs

t group to ever advance to the final four on Saturday. The Hurons will have to get by Bangor (20-9) Friday at 1 p.m.

WHILE IT FELT like a post-season game, with Posen completing a historic 20-0 season with a 68-65 win against Cedarville, the playoffs actually began this week with the district tournament in Posen. The Vikings overcame a nine-point second quarter deficit by playing better defense late in the first half, and when they got the lead, the fans from Posen who out-cheered the home crowd at Cedarville didn’t end the evening disappointed, as Posen held off a slew of late challenges by the Trojans.

The Vikings will play Johannesburg-Lewiston tonight, looking for a berth in Saturday’s district final against the winner of the Atlanta vs. Hillman game. Posen will be looking for its second straight district title. Once that goal is met, if no major upsets occur, they would like to move on to the regional tournament at Newberry.
