Harbor Springs student is the top lifter at inaugural event in Onaway

Ron Shock of Harbor Springs impressed participants and spectators at Onaway’s first-ever weight lifting competition in the OHS cafetorium.,p> Shock lifted 305 pounds on the bench press, 450 in the power squat exercise, and 500 pounds in the dead lift. His overall weight was 1255 pounds.

“The weights he lifted were just phenomenal,” said event organizer Earl Flynn. The next closest competitor was James Bruning of Rogers City, who lifted an overall weight of 1,025 pounds.

“I wish we could get more kids from other schools, but it’s the first year we did it,” said Flynn. “Hopefully next year it’ll be bigger and we can hold it on a Saturday, where it can last all day.”

) lifted the third most with 950 pounds. He was followed by Lonnie Splan (178) with 905 pounds. Flynn believes one of the reasons lifting is catching on in Onaway is because OHS has the best weight lifting room in northern Michigan. He said more than $15,000 has been spent improving the facility the last three years.
