Bassett, LaLonde compete in wrestling state finals

While neither claimed a medal, sophomores Steve Bassett and Andrew LaLonde represented their community well at last week’s Division IV wrestling state finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Bassett went 1-2 on the day, while LaLonde dropped both his matches. With two years of eligibility left, both will look to make it back to Auburn Hills in the future.

“The boys represented the school and the community with a lot of dignity,” said Cardinal coach Mark Grant. “They got a taste of state competition, and ready to start working now toward next year.”

Bassett, wrestling at 103 pounds, began his day by falling to Mykel Sumner of Addison, 7-4. Sumner would go on to place eighth in the weight class.

Bassett bounced back to defeat Max Stokes of Marcelus by technical fall, 23-6. That put him a position where he needed one more win to get into the medal round.

Unfortunately, he dropped his third match to John Stein of Three Oaks River Valley, 8-2, and was eliminated. Stein would finish third at 103 pounds. Bassett finished his season 25-7.

LaLonde, wrestling at 145 pounds, was pinned in his first match by Kyle Judy of Homer, then pinned in his second by Josh Scott of Manchester. Judy would finish sixth at 145, while Scott would finish seventh.

LaLonde wraps up his sophomore season with a record of 31-9.
