Soo takes win over Hurons: district pairings announced

A tale of two halves had the Hurons fall way behind in the first half and stage a frantic comeback in the second. The Hurons lost to Sault Ste. Marie 70-55 Tuesday as the season swings into the final few games. Rogers City fell behind to the hosts 21-5 in the first quarter and trailed 35-10 at halftime. Then the Hurons, refusing to give up, came out with resolve in the second half. “In the second half we looked like a whole new team,” said coach Karl Grambau. “We had good shots in the first half but we just were not making them.”

THE HURONS totaled 45 points in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the slow start. “If we could just put two halves together we would be in good shape,” Grambau said. The second half surge featured a balanced scoring effort.

Bret Karsten scored 11 to pace the Hurons while the trio of Charley Smolinski, Justin Wilbert, and Justin Senff each scored eight. Chris Paschke scored seven while Chris Santini and Jeff Cornett each scored six.

THE JV came out on the short end of a 60-31 score. Nick Kowalski scored 10 while Andy Grambau added six. The Hurons travel to St. Ignace Friday and play in Alpena Tuesday, then host Newberry February 25 as the regular season winds down.

In the other bracket, Mio takes on Hale with the winner to play Whittemore-Prescott. The district final game is set for Friday, March 4 at 7 p.m. All games will be played in Mio.
