Several candidates file for school boards

The deadline has passed for residents living within the boundaries of the Rogers City, Posen, and Onaway school districts to file for the May 3 school election. Those wishing to get their names on the ballot had until Tuesday afternoon to return a nominating petition. None of the races is contested in Rogers City or Posen, but there are four candidates running for two positions in Onaway.

Two four-year terms will be up for grabs in Rogers City and two candidates will be on the ballot: incumbent Michael A. Marx of Rogers City, who is currently serving as president, and newcomer Lee Gapczynski of Rogers Township, who is a businessman in Rogers City. The other school board seat available is the two years left on Greg Frost’s term. Former board member Scott A. McLennan of Rogers City, a businessman from the area, has filed his paperwork to run for the position. Frost resigned last year and Keith Gordon was appointed to serve until the next election. Incumbent Norm Karbon, who is completing his 11th year on the board, did not file.

TWO-YEAR terms also will be decided in Posen, and at the deadline, an incumbent and a newcomer had filed. Randall Styma of Posen Township is completing his first full term and turned in nominating petitions to the county clerk’s office, while Mitchell Louis Mulka of Krakow Township will be on the ballot as well. Patricia Soik’s fifth term will be her last, as the incumbent board member did not file.

IN ONAWAY, a pair of four-year terms are up for grabs. Incumbent Sue Nelson of Forest Township is running for one of the seats, while former board candidates Marsha Tovar of Forest Township, Cathy Nash of Forest Township, and Daniel Heythaler of Case Township are in the running. Absent from the list of candidates is Jeff Whitsitt, who has served four full terms in the district. He did not file before the deadline. The deadline to file as a write-in candidate in any district is the Friday before the election, April 29 at 4 p.m.
