Rogers City Volleyball team makes strong showing in St. Louis

The Hurons traveled to St. Louis for their last invitational match of the season on Saturday and played well against some of the tougher teams in the state. Rogers City made it to the semi-finals by finishing second in its pool behind the overall winner St. Louis. In pool play the Hurons dropped their first game to Pewamo-Westphalia 19-25 but then they came back to win the match against the Class C team, 25-20 and 15-9. They went up against Class B Williamston in their next match and won hard fought games, 25-20 and 25-23.

ROGERS CITY met the host team, St. Louis, in their final pool play match. In the first game, the Hurons went down 14-0 but battled hard in the second game only to lose 22-25. St. Louis is ranked number six in Class C in the coaches’ poll. In bracket play Rogers City drew Midland Dow and snatched victory from the Class A team 26-24 in the first game. Then the Hurons took charge scoring a decisive 25-17 win over the bigger school.

The team faced Alma in the semi-finals, losing two closely contested games, 18-25 and 21-25. The Class B Alma team went down to defeat against St. Louis in the final.

ON THE DAY, Ashley Fleming had 43 kills, 6 blocks, 6 aces, 28 digs and 6 set assists. Becky Bruning had 23 kills and 3 blocks, 6 aces, and 32 digs. Megan Hanson got 2 kills, 4 blocks, 4 aces, 12 digs and 42 set assists. Carrie Haselhuhn added 4 kills, 5 digs, and 21 set assists. Dana Fairbanks notched 12 kills, 4 aces, 20 digs and 4 set assists. Tiffiny Krueger contributed 12 kills, 6 aces, and 17 digs. Simone Kapala had 5 aces and 10 digs.

The team’s match record stands at 31 wins and 9 losses. They are 4 and 1 in the SAC. The team is honorable mention in the state coaches’ poll. Rogers City had the night off on Monday when the match at Petoskey was canceled due to bad weather. They travel to Rudyard today for a makeup match. The Hurons will host the Straits Area Conference tournament on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.
