Undefeated, unranked Vikings roll on

The Posen boys basketball team picked right up where it left off with its fifth win of the season at De Tour, 77-31, and will resume North Star League action Friday at home against Hale. The Vikings (5-0, 4-0) were led by Matt Ponik who scored a season-high 26 points against the Red Raiders. The senior forward was three-for-four from three-point land. “We played very good solid defense and had a great run in the third quarter,” said Viking coach Ron Misiak. Posen put together a 22-2 run to start the second half, which got the running clock into effect. The halftime lead was 46-21. The only quarter that was close was the fourth, but Posen still won it 9-8.

The game, which started an hour earlier because of the distance between the schools, was over early and the boys were on the bus heading home at 7:45 a.m. Aaron Hincka finished with 21 points, while James Sobek had 15. Every player on the team scored except two. Misiak was pleased with the performance of Sobek and commended him for playing “an excellent ball game.” Maybe the blowout score will catch the eye of state pollsters.

The Associated Press state poll debuted this week, before Posen took the floor against De Tour, and the Vikes are nowhere to be found in the Class D rankings. From northern Michigan, Bellaire is ranked fifth and Cedarville is an honorable mention. Both schools were 4-0. Posen’s opponent Friday, Hale, is coming off a 71-33 victory over Arenac Eastern. The next action after that game will be Tuesday at Atlanta. The junior varsity easily won its game, 60-31. The JV record is 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the NSL.
