Posen storms back but still comes up short against defending league champs

After a slow start in the opening game of Monday’s match with defending North Star League champs Hale, the Posen (2-1, 1-1) volleyball team made the visiting Eagles earn every single point. Hale defeated the Vikes 25-8 in the first game but Posen came back to take a 21-18 advantage in game two. The girls let the lead slip away as Hale went on a late run. Posen trailed 24-21 and could get no closer than two points when Hale put game two into the books with the clinching point.

A loss in that situation can be demoralizing, especially when it looked like the Vikings had the game, but the red and white stormed back with 25-22 and 25-19 victories. The game five, match clincher would go to the first school to reach 15 points. Hale took the game 15-6 and the match. The match, which took about two hours to play, is the Vikings first loss of the season. Coach John Dietlin said his squad was close to winning the second game and believes the schools match up real well. There were long volleys in the contest that lasted more than two minutes at a time.

“We look forward to squaring up with them again,” said Dietlin. The coach only has to wait until the end of the month. The match at Hale is January 27. Courtney Romel had 59 assists for the Vikings, while Jill Krajniak had eight digs, two kills, and two aces. Dorothy Romel had five aces and Whitney Meeder came up with seven digs and two kills.

The junior varsity swept its games 25-18, 25-11, and 25-22. Michelle Mulka had four aces, one dig, two assists, and scored 15 points, while Roxann Hincka had three aces and nine serving points.
