Posen has mini-winning streak stopped at Fairview

The Viking volleyball team had a three match-winning streak come to an end Monday at Fairview. Posen (5-3 overall, 4-3 North Star League) won the second of four games 25-10, but dropped the final two games 25-14 and 25-23. The Vikings were down 24-18 in the final game when Amanda Pieczynski served five consecutive points to close the gap, but Fairview put the match away with the game clincher. The Eagles set the tone for the night with a 25-19 victory in the opening game.

“We had too many errors,” said coach John Dietlin. “I’m disappointed we lost, but it was a good effort.” Dietlin said Fairview had a “good server” who kept his squad off balance. The only action over the next week is at Hale tonight. Due to a scheduling conflict, the Brimley match for Monday has been cancelled. Courtney Romel had six aces and assisted on 69 of Posen’s 81 points against Fairview. Katie Lewandowski had four digs, while Pieczynski saved three balls from hitting the floor. Whitney Meeder had two kills.

LAST THURSDAY against Au Gres was the victory that took the longest to earn this season. It went all five, with Posen winning the second game, along with the fourth and fifth games. All five games were decided by six points or less. Two were decided by the slimmest of margins, two. Jackie Szczerowski had a block that brought Posen within two, 23-21, in game one, but the visiting Wolverines came back with the final two points. Au Gres was in the driver’s seat in game two with a 23-20 lead, but couldn’t hold off a Viking comeback that probably made the difference between winning and losing on the night.

Aided by an ace by Lewandowski and several errors down the stretch by the Wolverines, Posen stole one, 25-23. Au Gres came back to wrap up game three, 25-20, and would have gone home with the match, if the Wolverines hadn’t lost game two, but that left the door open

for Posen to clean up in the final two games, 25-19 and 15-13.

Dorothy Romel had seven aces, while Kim Donajkowski and Megan Latz had five kills each. Last Wednesday, during a makeup match against Arenac Eastern, Posen swept all three games and won the season series.

THE POSEN JV improved to 7-0 on the season with victories against Fairview, Au Gres, and Arenac Eastern. The scores against Fairview Monday were 25-8, 25-18, and 23-25. Jenny Ciarkowski led the Vikes with 22 serving points, including 15 aces, and set up five plays for points. Michelle Mulka had nine serving points, six aces, and four assists.

Kate Olsen had five points, three aces, and two digs. Against Au Gres, Elyse Perrault had 100 percent serving points (20) with four aces and two assists. Mulka had seven serving points, while Ciarkowski had six serving points and five assists. The scores were 25-5, 25-8, and 14-25. The JV showed no mercy against Arenac, winning the first two to take the match and then the final game, 25-8. Mary Calhoun had 11 aces of her 18 serving points.
